Nourish Your Soul, Shrink Your Waistline

Have you ever felt a gnawing emptiness inside that you tried to fill with food? That feeling of inner emptiness is usually a sign of spiritual disconnection. Even if you aren’t a religious person, you could call this “spirituality” a connection to your inner self, your inner peace, or any other term that works for you.

The point is, when you feel disconnected inside, it translates into your outer life circumstances and you may find yourself trying to fill the void with food.

Luckily, there are other options, and nourishing your soul is one of the best. By nourishing your soul I mean doing things that make you feel filled from within. Not empty anymore. Happy, inspired, comforted, peaceful.

There are many ways to do this, and the ones that work best for you may be different than what works for other people, but here are a few of my favorite ways to nourish my soul:

– Mindfulness

One common way that many of us end up feeling disconnected and scattered is by having our thoughts go racing along at 110mph. If we’re not HERE, in this moment, we are disconnected from ourselves.

Being mindful is a great way to bring yourself back to this moment and experience the power of presence. Simply find a quiet place to relax, and release all thoughts from your mind. Focus only on THIS place and time. Focus on your breath flowing in and out of your lungs, if you like. Or stare at an object in your current surroundings. However you do it, stay where you are with full awareness.

Within just a few minutes you should notice how GOOD you feel. Very centered, balanced, and yes, filled from within. No more confusion, no more disconnection.

– Inspiration

Another thing you can do is spend time focusing on things that inspire you. Visit a museum and look at the artwork. Go to the beach and marvel at the power of the sea. Read a book of poetry.

Anything that makes you feel uplifted is a good way to nourish your soul.

– Beauty

Similar to feeling inspired, observing beauty in any form can instantly make you feel appreciative and uplifted. Stroll through some public gardens and enjoy the beautiful flowers. Watch the sun rise or set. Take a scenic drive.

Any and all of these activities can help you nourish your soul – and shrink your waistline.
